Bertha carries two meanings. The first is "radiance": the brief glint that fire leaves on copper, the sun on the sea, a glass on the table. The second is hidden in its root. "Berth" means quay — where ships come alongside and journeys pause for breath. This table, set on the shore of the strait, takes its name from exactly there.
